Comic-Con ?????????????

I have been seeing discussion on LJ about different films and series in relationship to the COMIC-CON which is now underway in San Diego............
So how do films and series in general fit in with a COMIC convention?
In my mind COMIC means either humor related or comic as in comic books, not a discussion of film in general
Am I missing something here?

It's called Comic-Con, but it encompasses many other things. I wish to hell I was there right now, because it's packed with wall-to-wall awesome.

I always understood it to be one giant geek-fest.
I too, desperately wish I was there right now...*sigh*

Thank you for clarifying........
I first heard about it when someone on LJ lamented that
nobody from SGA would be there and I thought
"Eh??? Why would they given it is a COMIC convention??"
Thanks to you, now I know.........
Still makes no sense why they would refer to it as a COMIC convention if it is about film in general........

I have no idea of the history of it, it may very well have started out as a "proper" comic convention...it seems that cult tv shows and movies are heavily featured in recent years. The stuff that appeals to the sci-fi/cult comedy crowd...just cos we're really cool. =)

Well, firstly, many films out currently were comic books before they were films, ie. Transformers, GI Joe, Wolverine, etc. Secondly, fantasty/scifi shows becomes comics, ie. Stargate, Firefly, Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, etc. Thirdly, a good portion sci-fi/fantasy fantasy fans are comic book artist and/or readers, so intermingling is natural. Fourthly, and most importantly, publicists comprehend what a huge even Comic Con is, and thus what a huge opportunity it is, whilst Comic Con comprehends how much more money they bring in when they can attract non-comic fans to the event. ;)

Comic-Con: The Geekgasm
I went to Comic-Con for the first time. Holy tomatoes. I can't even begin to tell you what kind of event this is. The primary focus is comics, but it's become the best way to introduce new games based on comics (i.e.: Civil Wars, The Dark Knight: Arkham Asylum, etc.), new movies (i.e.: Green Lantern: First Light (excellent!), Solomon Kane, etc.), and televison shows (i.e.: Human Target (excellent!). Also, there are cult shows that have now become comics, such as Farscape.

Buck Rogers is being reinvented after 80 years in publication, thanks to the diligence of Gil Gerard and Flint Dille, whose grandfather created the original Buck Rogers comic strip. They're making webisodes, and a possible movie. Exciting!

Then of course, is the non-comic aspect. As [info]karri_kln1671 mentioned, the things used to keep this generation occupied. Twilight, True Blood, Vampire Diaries, etc. Previews and pilots of new shows and movies, along with returning shows, is a way to introduce them to people all at once.

All in all, I have to say I had the most fun at the Burn Notice panel. And Psych (who actually have a comic). Oh, and Dr. Who. Well, okay Torchwood. Did I mention Alien Trespass? Just go here... ComicCon Programming

It was ridiculous. The amount of anime, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and underground stuff I saw blew my mind.

Re: Comic-Con: The Geekgasm
Amazing how it starts out as a comic fest and soon becomes a
convention dedicated to filmdom in general
I love the panel idea........

**sighs***
Fridays are not the same anymore.
Thank goodness for ff

Re: Comic-Con: The Geekgasm
"But really the whole point of going is the bags!" my friend drilled into me as a primer. I have so much swag, it's not funny. Had to mail it back to myself.

Nope, no SGA, since See-Fee is pushing SGU. I did enjoy the Sanctuary panel. It's not so much about the films; hardcore CC fans were pissed about the whole Twilight crap. who knows, maybe they'll have a con dedicated to just media in the future. But right now, it's the only place to cram people from all over the world into one place and gage reactions to their product. I quite enjoyed all the panels on the comic stuff; it reminded me how I used to love to read them and that I should start buying them again (I am so all over the Green Lantern: Blackest Night series!).

And being able to see the stars of my favorite shows was awesome too. And, yes, David Tennant is really a sprite; and John Barrowman is naughty. Then Russell T. Davies comes out, and together they're R-rated. LOL Brilliant!

Now, seriously... I need to start typing my Big Bang fic. No! Really! What was I thinking?!
