The thousand Man AU

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 1:09 AM
Help please,
I had this story bookedmarked, but the link no longer works. I have the story listed in my favorites as "The thousand Man AU- sentianl Guide"
The story is set in the present time. Chris is a Sentianl and Buck is a Guide. They are the strongest Sentianel and Guide in the area, but they are not bonded. Eventualy Ezra and Vin, who are children, show up. They have run away from a man, who bought Ezra from Mude and kidnapped Vin. Ezra is a Guide and bonds with Chris on the night Chris tries to kill himself (because he lost Sara and Adam.) Vin, a sentianl, bonds with Buck the same night. The others are in the story as well. I think Nathan and Josia are bonded and JD might be bonded to Casey.

Does anyone know where I can find this story?
Please and thank you

What Irony is This?

So when I finally got into fantasy books in my teen years, it was adult fantasy books I gravitated toward (DragonLance, Barbara Hambly, Piers Anthony). Yet as I grew older, I found myself wandering more and more toward young adult fantasy. Just last week I went to the bookstore, got two young adult fantasies and only one adult fantasy (Night Watch, by Terry Prachett, because you recommended it, [info]bratfarrar , and it's about darn time I got around to reading it.)

Santa Fe Chicken

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 6:14 PM
I made this for dinner tonight, along with some white rice and sour cream. It turned out wonderfully, so I figured I would share. I'll definitely be making it again!

Crock Pot Santa Fe Chicken
Courtesy Gina's Weight Watcher Recipes

Serves 8 / Points: 4.25 ww points

* 24 oz (1 1/2) lbs chicken breast
* 14.4 oz can diced tomatoes with mild green chile peppers
* 15 oz can black beans
* 8 oz frozen corn (I used canned, it worked just as well)
* 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
* 14.4 oz can fat free chicken broth
* 3 scallions, chopped
* 1 tsp garlic powder (I added extra before serving)
* 1 tsp onion powder (I added extra before serving)
* 1 tsp cumin
* 1 tsp cayenne pepper (to taste)
* salt to taste

Combine chicken broth, beans, corn, tomatoes, cilantro, scallions, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, cayenne pepper and salt in the crock pot. Season chicken breast with salt and lay on top. Cook on low for 10 hours or on high for 6 hours. Half hour before serving, remove chicken and shred. Return chicken to slow cooker and stir in. Adjust salt and seasoning. Serve over rice (extra pts).

I added some shredded sharp cheddar to each serving, along with a blob of sour cream. Yum! If you're not a rice fan, this would also go well with warmed tortillas, or on top of a baked potato. Taste-wise, it's a lot like chicken tortilla soup, but more hearty. Enjoy!

Pain Perdu

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 12:34 PM
Does anyone have a tried and true recipe for a really custardy pain perdu? I had a craving for it last night & made some baked french toast, but it didn't come out right. The leftovers are rock hard & I have them soaking in milk.
I usually think of regular french toast as something really yummy when it's hot, but that I choke on when it starts to cool & get tough. Is thicker bread the secret? I thought it might come out better if I did it in the crockpot.

Three more days, then SGA Big Bang!

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 8:23 PM
SGA Big Bang is close at hand - Nov. 12: that's this Thursday. Lots and lots of reading is in our future :D

And I would like to encourage all those who read that, should you enjoy what you read, please, please, please don't forget to let the writer know that all their hard work was appreciated. i.e. don't forget to review. Between the story lengths (the word limit is set at 40,000), the various due dates involved, having to have more than one beta beta and RL issues, writing for Big Bang was a labor of love plus blood, sweat and tears. Everyone worked hard on their stories, so don't let them feel like all that effort has gone to waste. If you like what you read, then review it.

Same with the artists. Like their artwork? Then let them know.

Celebrating Spring

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 4:14 PM
 It's kind of like spring here these days.  I suppose I should actually be thinking of it more like Indian Summer, but really, it feels and smells more like spring -- in spite of the autumn leaves falling!

We have had the most amazing weather here in the Midwest the past couple of days.  It's been warm enough to open the windows and let the breezes blow through -- four days in a row.  It's cooling down a bit now, but I'm reluctant to let the joy of having my windows open go, so I'm going to leave them open and put on a sweater.  Hard to believe it's like that in November, particularly after we've already had some snow flurries in October.  Ah, well -- I'm not going to complain, or worry about what it means for the coming winter.  I expect I'll enjoy winter when it gets here, but for now, I'm enjoying spring-like November!

I suppose I should update you all on my last update.  I did indeed spend time with my ailing dad and brother, which was good for everyone.  My brother probably had H1N1 flu, but he's recovered now and back to work with most of his full strength.  My dad was sick with some kind of upper respiratory thing, which is bad for him as he's an asthmatic who is prone to pneumonia.  But we got him to the doctor in time and nipped it in the bud, and he's doing fine.  It was good to spend time there and help out, though it wasn't much of a relaxing break from the routine that a visit north usually is!

DH and I then got our weekend in our own house, and we spent a day raking leaves.  It always amazes me how high the piles of leaves can be in our little yard.  We have four big trees that are 60-80 years old, and very tall and full of leaves -- two of those trees are catalpa trees, which have exceedingly large leaves.  In addition, our yard is situated in such a way that it serves as a windbreaker for the west-northwest wind that usually blows through, and all the leaves from other yards that are carried with the wind end up in our yard!  So it's a fun time raking in the fall.  We like doing it, though, so it was definitely a fun way to spend the weekend.

Unfortunately, on the way to our leaf-raking weekend, our car's transmission decided to let us know that it had quite enough and was planning on quitting.  We were only a few blocks from our Wisconsin house when this happened, so that was good!  It made the ensuing week a bit more complicated than we had planned, but we ended up leaving the car up there and borrowing a vehicle from the inlaws to get back to Chicago.

DH returned north after dropping me off here in Chitown, so he could be with his dad who had surgery at the end of the week, and see about getting the car fixed.  He's decided to get it fixed rather than buy a different car, though it's going to cost a pretty penny!  But such is life.  We have the money at the moment, so that is a blessing, and it will be good to have our car back eventually.  In the meantime, we'll borrow the inlaws' vehicle again!

While DH has been up dealing with all that, I've been having a lovely 5 days of alone time!  :-)  I like to have time to myself now and then, and this opportunity came at a really good time for me.  I didn't really need to be anywhere that needed a car, so I didn't have that to worry about, and I was able to work on some projects that required more space than is usually available when two people are rubbing elbows in a small apartment.  I'm feeling very relaxed, as a result.

Of course, I'm looking forward to seeing my DH tomorrow!  I think 5 days of alone time is about enough.  ;-)

Found it here. Lost it. Can't work out best fit tag wise. so Chris/vin established relationship. Vin gives up apartment but hasn't got round to telling Chris. Chris has relative of Sarah's turning up and tells Vin to move to spare room. Vin says he would rather not be there (feels awkward) but his apartment has been let. Ends up sleeping in office? Ezra finds out and gets Vin to stay at his house. Chris is oblivious to how he has hurt Vin's feelings. Relative finds out about Vin but is angry at Chris for being hurtful, not about Chris being gay or moving on. Chris then can't find Vin or misreads situation with Ezra? Fairly sure it ends happily, either Chris/Vin or Chris/Vin/Ezra. Probably Chris/vin. (I spent an embarrassing length of time looking for this as Gibbs/Dinozzo before remembering the Ezra bit. Sigh. So many fandoms. So small a memory.)

Meet Ella!

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 4:14 PM

My husband and I got a new addition to our family over the weekend.  Her name is Ella.  She is part beagle and about 3-4 years old.  We don't know much about her other than my husband's friend found her in the woods and she was half starved.  He took her home and took care of her, but can't keep her.  We agreed to take her and couldn't be more pleased.  She is such a sweetheart.  She goes to the door when she wants to go out.  She sleeps in bed with the other dogs.  She does snore very loudly:)  We have discovered that she adores my husband.  Today, when he left to go to work, she sat at the door and cried.  Oh well!  I still have my boys:)
